- Meta Platforms Inc META Facebook suffered a setback in its lawsuit in a European Union court against a German antitrust decision that called for an overhaul of the social media giant’s business model.
- Competition authorities are investigating Meta for alleged abuse of a dominant position and are entitled to consider other rules such as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, an adviser to the bloc’s top court said in a non-binding opinion. Bloomberg reported.
- The non-binding opinion, if followed by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), could encourage the German enforcement agency and its peers in other EU countries to expand their scrutiny of big tech based on data protection rules.
- Meta’s battle with Germany’s anti-trust authorities began in 2019 after they accused the company of abusing its market power by collecting user data without their consent and ordered it to shut down. Meta questioned the finding.
- Meta is also in the crosshairs of the German regulator to link its virtual reality products Oculus to the social network and platform.
- The EU GDPR gave data watchdogs unprecedented powers to fine and made the authorities where a company has its EU location the primary oversight over them.
- Lately, alphabet inc Google WELL Google suffered his second Backlash in Europe in less than a year when the EU’s top court settled with the bloc’s antitrust authorities against a landmark €4.3 billion ($4.3 billion) fine against the tech giant for abusing its influence.
- Price promotion: META shares traded 0.69% lower at $147 on the latest check Tuesday premarket.
