A man killed at least four people and injured three others in an hour-long rampage through Memphis on Wednesday before a high-speed chase ended in his arrest, police in the US city said.

Officials identified the suspect as Ezekiel Kelly, 19, and said he was arrested with two guns in his vehicle around 21:00 local time (01:00 GMT on Thursday).

“[Kelly]was taken into custody without incident by the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office,” Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said at a news conference.

Kelly allegedly killed his first victim just after midnight Wednesday and went on a killing spree through the city of Tennessee in the afternoon and early evening, Davis said.

There were at least eight separate crime scenes, police said, including carjacking and a shooting at a local store, and Kelly had live streamed portions of his stroll.

“Ezekiel Kelly was on Facebook Live when he opened fire in the store,” Davis said.

As the shooting continued, authorities issued a “shelter in place” order, effectively sealing off parts of the city.

Mass shootings and other gun violence occur regularly in the United States, but Congress has been reluctant to pass tough gun control legislation because the issue remains politically contentious.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, at least 490 people have been killed in mass shootings and mass murders in the United States so far in 2022, with 14,050 people dying in the same period in gun-related incidents, excluding suicides.

Memphis has seen a string of high-profile killings in recent months, including the killing of a pastor during a car theft and last week’s kidnapping and murder of a woman who was out before dawn.

“I am angry. I’m angry with (the victims) and I’m angry with our citizens who had to shelter for their own safety until this suspect was caught,” Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said after Wednesday’s shooting.

“It’s not a way for us to live, and it’s not acceptable.”
