Although it needs to be proven by discovery that it meets the “preponderance of evidence” standard, Twitter’s stance as a narrative executor does make it walk and talk like a state actor.

This is ridiculous because the only person Ritter spoke badly about was Joe Biden. If Ritter did threaten Biden, he would soon be kicked out by the FBI. Instead, he just called Biden a war criminal, which this site (for Yemen) has done, and many others have done for every US president dating back at least to Clinton. Even for defamation, where the legal threshold is much lower, public figures are seen as accustomed to criticism.

Many Twitterati complained about Twitter bans. Ritter was reinstated at the end of April 6. By the morning of April 10, he was banned again. It has all the hallmarks of someone relying on Twitter to revert to their original stance.

Twitter cites Ritter’s reply to the April 3 tweet… which has been deleted by its author @MattGallagher0 so the whole world can’t even censor one side of the exchange. Here’s Ritter’s response:

Marines [murdered] Haditha killed more Iraqis than Russians in Bucha because Haditha was not a false flag mass murder. On the other hand, Butcha…

If you care about the details, Ritter explains Haditha in his article, and he also sometimes mentions it in his videos.

The tweet was again described as harassment and abuse. Obviously not. Instead, Twitter has a zero-tolerance policy on anyone who says Bucha does look like Ukrainian capers.

Now we come to the part where Twitter makes it clear that it offers Ritter. I won’t go into the painful and absurd details that Ritter documented on Consortium News. But the short version is that Twitter allowed the Ritter copycat to set up shop, and the copycat made it clear that his account was the restored account of the old @realScottRitter. Despite Ritter’s protests, Twitter refused to take down the fake account, despite clear violations of Twitter’s policies and laws against identity theft.

Frankly, this is stupid for Twitter because it makes their vendetta against Ritter indisputable rather than acting on company policy.

This unfortunate episode illustrates one of the big reasons we never spend much time on Twitter. As we often say here, “If your business depends on a platform, you don’t have a business.” Yes, if Lambert, Jerri and I spent more time on Twitter, we might have more followers. We’ll also have far less interaction (think of all the discreet and reasonable comments here, and their many links). It will all be owned by the platform.
