A 60-year-old man allegedly vaccinated himself against COVID-19 dozens of times in Germany in order to sell fake vaccine cards with real vaccine lot numbers to people who didn’t want to get vaccinated themselves.

The man, from the eastern German city of Magdeburg, whose name has not been released under German privacy rules, is said to have received as many as 90 shots against COVID-19 at a vaccination centre in the eastern state of Saxony for months until police officers caught him This month, German news agency dpa reported on Sunday.

The suspect was not detained but is being investigated for the unauthorized issuance of vaccine cards and forged documents, the dpa reported.

He was caught at a vaccination center in Elenburg, Saxony, when he showed up for the second day in a row to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Police confiscated several of his blank vaccination cards and launched criminal proceedings.

It’s unclear what effect the roughly 90 COVID-19 vaccines from different brands have had on the man’s personal health.

In recent months, German police have carried out several raids on fake vaccine passports. Many COVID-19 deniers refuse to be vaccinated in Germany, but at the same time want the coveted COVID-19 passport for easier access to public life and places such as restaurants, theatres, swimming pools or workplaces.

Infections in Germany have remained high for weeks, but many measures to contain the pandemic ended on Friday. Masks are no longer mandatory in grocery stores and most theaters, but remain mandatory on public transportation.

Students are also no longer required to wear masks in most schools in Germany, leading teachers’ associations to warn of possible clashes in the classroom.

“There is now a danger that on the one hand children who wear masks will be teased by their classmates as cowards and overprotective, and on the other hand children who do not wear masks will be stressed,” Heinz-Peter Meidinger, president of the German Teachers’ Association, told the dpa. He advocated for teachers and students to voluntarily commit to continue wearing masks in classrooms and on campus, at least until the country’s two-week Easter break.

Health experts say Germany’s latest surge in infections — triggered by a subvariant of BA.2 omicron — may have peaked.

On Sunday, the country’s disease control agency reported 74,053 new COVID-19 infections in a single day, less than a week after it reported 111,224 daily infections.

Overall, Germany has registered 130,029 COVID-19 deaths.
