FiveThirtyEight is looking for a friendly, collaborative and creative Senior Visual Reporter Join our interactive and graphics team. The Senior Visual Reporter is the Head of Design for the FiveThirtyEight Newsroom. While they primarily act as individual contributors, they also amplify the team’s work by mentoring more junior visual journalists, giving and receiving feedback thoughtfully, and leading by example. We are looking for an experienced journalist who will have strong journalistic judgment, a keen eye for detail and will hold our work to the highest standards.

Senior Visual Reporter will report to Associate Editor, Interaction and Graphicsor Interactive Senior Editor And work closely with the rest of the interactive team, as well as reporters and editors across the newsroom. This full-time position with benefits is a US position. Full-time remote work may be considered, but since our office is located in New York City, we prefer candidates from that area.

Responsibilities:

  • Beautifully crafted, visually striking stories and projects that engage, inspire and engage our readers
  • Lead the design process for our large projects, including creating principles, specifications and other documents to delegate work to teams
  • Facilitate daily chart-making rotations and “secondments” inexperienced visual journalists
  • Inspiring, mentoring and mentoring teammates and colleagues in visual work
  • Participate in larger strategic conversations about visual style, website design, branding, accessibility, and more
  • Provide thoughtful, candid feedback to colleagues, colleagues, and managers, and accept it openly in turn

Basic qualifications:

  • Three or more years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency with design software, especially Adobe Illustrator
  • Proficient in JavaScript and one or more libraries for creating graphics, such as D3, and a functional understanding of the “full stack” of web development technologies
  • Basic statistical fluency – for example, a conversational understanding of concepts such as error and regression analysis
  • Eager to collaborate with other visual reporters, computational reporters, reporters and editors across the newsroom
  • Experience working on deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years or more of relevant experience
  • Strong understanding of American politics, especially electoral politics, major American sports and/or science
  • Experience with statistical programming languages ??such as R
  • Experience with cartography and drawing tools such as QGIS and TopoJSON
  • Experience applying product design techniques to large-scale news projects such as user research, rapid prototyping and user testing
