Deeply Split State High Court Upholds $18M Fine for Trade Association’s Campaign Finance Violations

The Washington state Supreme Court upheld an $18 million fine for a grocery trade association’s violation of campaign finance laws.

In a 5-4 decision, the panel determined that the Grocery Manufacturer Association’s penalty for intentionally concealing the source of political contributions may be based on the amount concealed, and that the fine itself was not excessive. GMA officially changed its name to Consumer Brands Association in 2020, according to its website.
