Humana on Friday named Dr. Andrew Agwunobi as president of its growing home solutions business, a veteran health insurer and provider executive who will begin work on February 21.

Agwunobi is from the University of Connecticut, where he currently serves as the university’s interim president and chief executive of the UConn Health System. He previously served as Chief Operating Officer of St. Joseph Health System, a network of 14 hospitals headquartered in Irvine, California, and CEO of Providence Health Care System, headquartered in Renton, Washington. Agqunobi also oversees the Florida Health Care Administration and its $16 billion budget.

In his new role at Humana, Agwunobi will report directly to CEO Bruce Broussard and serve as a member of the management team. He fills the vacancy left by Susan Diamond, who last June was promoted from president of the home care business unit to chief financial officer of Humana. Broussard noted that Agwunobi’s medical and professional experience leading a home health care organization is a benefit to insurers.

Agwunobi is a pediatrician with a medical degree from Jos University in Nigeria and an MBA from Stanford University.

“He’s a doctor — he understands the value of home care, why older adults want more care, and our vision is to make it easier for people to get the care they need at home,” Broussard said in a news release said at the meeting.
