Reasonlabs explained: “The file identifies itself as’spiderman_net_putidomoi.torrent.exe’, which is translated from Russian to’spiderman_no_wayhome.torrent.exe’.” The company believes that the file is most likely from a Russian torrent site.

The miner adds exclusions to Windows Defender, creates persistence, and spawns a watchdog process to maintain its activity.
“The malware tries to avoid checking eyes by using’legitimate’ names for the files and processes it creates; for example, it claims to be provided by Google and deletes the file named sihost64.exe and injects svchost.exe,” Reasonlabs described.
The network security company recommends that a simple precaution is to always check whether the extension of the file being downloaded matches the extension of the file to be downloaded. For example, movie files should end with “.mp4” instead of “.exe”.The company added: “To make sure you see the real file extension, open a folder, go to “View” and check “File Extension”.
