Faced with the cold weather, the number of COVID-19 infections has surged. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Friday that all indoor public places need to wear masks unless companies or places implement vaccine requirements.

Hochell said that the decision to re-implement the mask-wearing rule was based on the increase in cases and hospitalizations, which is particularly evident in parts of upstate New York.

New York issued a mask regulation at the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020, which ends in June 2021 and applies to individuals who have been vaccinated. The new mask regulations apply to customers and staff, and will take effect from Monday to January 15, after which the state will reassess.

“We are entering a period of uncertainty, and we may stand still here, otherwise our case may get out of control,” Hochell warned in a public appearance in New York City.

New York joins several states with similar indoor mask regulations, including Washington, Oregon, Illinois, New Mexico, Nevada and Hawaii.

Mandatory masks have become a hot issue. For several weeks, Hochul has stated that the local government will decide whether to re-implement the COVID-19 agreement. She is cautious about whether the resistance community will abide by the stricter rules.

Hochul’s statement on Friday was cheered by some of his fellow Democrats and unions representing retail and grocery workers, even though Republicans called it over-expansion and an unnecessary burden on businesses.

Violators may face civil and criminal penalties, including fines up to $1,000. Hochul said the local health department will be responsible for implementing these requirements, and Republican Rockland County Administrator Ed Day said the governor’s staff were unable to provide detailed information about the new requirements.

“I told the governor’s staff that we cannot and will not implement the current requirements,” Dai said in a prepared press release.

The chairman of the Niagara County Legislature and Republican Becky Wydysh (Becky Wydysh) said that local officials do not believe that authorization is the best use of resources. Wydysh said in a statement that the county will adopt an “educational cooperation approach” to enforce the law.

Manager Scott Delahant said: “Our employees wear masks, but we no longer require all customers to wear masks because it is too difficult.” “Frankly, I’m tired of arguing with people.”

He said that although there was a slogan on the door encouraging the wearing of masks and a basket of free disposable masks, many shoppers browsed naked.

Hochul’s social service agency in Manhattan announced the rules for wearing masks, and most people there are already wearing masks. New York City requires vaccinations in indoor restaurants, entertainment, and gyms, and places that require vaccinations will not be affected by the new regulations.

In the 7 days as of Wednesday, the state recorded more than 68,000 tests positive for the virus. This is the most in any 7 days since the beginning of February, and interest rates are rising in almost all counties.

“We are moving in a direction that I think is no longer sustainable,” Hochul said.

Nearly 3,500 people in New York were hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 cases-nearly double the 1,794 on November 7.

This surge is particularly pronounced in some areas of northern New York, which has accounted for nearly three-quarters of COVID-19 deaths confirmed in hospitals since August. Several northern counties have recently enacted mask-wearing regulations, including Erie County, which includes Buffalo.

In Sullivan County in the middle of the Hudson Valley, public health director Nancy McGraw said that people are already complacent about the virus and she supports the regulation of wearing masks. She said the vaccination rate in remote areas, including Woodburn, was disappointingly low, where only 36% of the approximately 3,000 residents were fully vaccinated.

“Our law enforcement resources are very limited, and people need to do the right thing,” McGraw said. “Public responsibility is critical here.”

The percentage of fully vaccinated residents in New York ranks seventh: Federal data updated as of Friday at 70.1%. However, based on data from approximately 1,300 postal codes provided by the New York State Health Agency, less than 60% of residents in New York State’s more than 500 postal codes have been vaccinated.

Due to capacity issues, starting Thursday, 32 northern hospitals in Niagara and elsewhere had to restrict non-essential elective surgeries.

Glen Falls Hospital in Warren County, one of the state’s worst-hit hospitals, said that as of Wednesday, 50 of the 165 patients had COVID-19. According to state data, this is the largest number of infected patients reported in the hospital’s history.

“We are very busy in all departments of the hospital,” said hospital spokesperson F. Raymond Agnew. He said that 70% of COVID-19 hospital admissions are people who have not been vaccinated.
