University of Florida Health (UF Health) has joined the growing list of national healthcare systems, bringing leading medical care to the shopping mall environment through UF Health The Oaks, a specialty clinic located in the Oaks Mall in Gainesville, Florida health care. The 139,000 square foot clinic has three specialties-ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and audiology in the former hypermarket retail space. The second phase of the project adds a 25,000 square foot outpatient surgery center to support ophthalmology and ENT surgery. With the steady increase in demand for ophthalmology, otolaryngology and audiology services, the decision to concentrate all outpatient programs of all three clinics in a centralized space is in line with UF Health’s strategic goal of making it easier for community members to access important health resources .
The essence of this adaptive reuse project is several unique design challenges and opportunities. The design team uses these challenges and opportunities to bring benefits to UF Health, patients and employees. The transformation of the main store in the former shopping center has resulted in a space different from anywhere else in the Gainesville area. Its creative layout is designed to adapt to the natural flow of visits, providing a seamless and efficient experience for patients, visitors and staff. The thoughtful design of the clinic and the rich facilities include patient-centered functions, such as passionate, custom-designed artwork; natural lighting; atypical high ceilings that can achieve high-impact lighting functions; and color-coded architectural features, Intuitive wayfinding methods can be created to help patients navigate the space more easily. It also respects the reputation of the owner and becomes a compelling recruitment and retention tool for top medical talent.
