Adam Petty did not have any filters when speaking after becoming the first Briton to defend the Olympic swimming gold medal.

He said: “I thought I had done the best preparation of my life, but then you participated in the morning finals and threw it out the window.

“This is what it takes to be an athlete.

“It doesn’t matter who is the best in the whole year, what matters is who is the best of the day, who is the most adaptable, really, who the fuck wants it more!”
