The Mission Group stated that the collapse occurred at about 10:45 am Pacific time in a downtown Brooklyn building on Bernard Street.

Emergency rescuers were called to the scene and the building was evacuated.

On Monday afternoon, the BC Emergency Health Service stated that three patients were taken to the hospital due to injuries of varying degrees.

Kelowna RCMP Inspector said: “At present, we are not going to confirm the number of casualties in this incident, but at least one person died as a result of the incident.” Adam Mackintosh said at a media conference.

MacIntosh said at least one person was missing.

According to Mission Group CEO Jonathan Friesen (Jonathan Friesen), the deceased was a subcontractor, not an employee of the company.

“It doesn’t matter whose employees they are. They are on our website, and because of their work, they really lost their lives,” Friesen said.

BC Coroners Service and WorkSafeBC are conducting their own investigations into the incident.

“Mission Group expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of people affected by this tragedy. We have set up support services to help those in need,” a spokesperson for the development company said in a statement.

The police set up a four-block perimeter and evacuated the area around St. Paul Street, Doyle Avenue, Bertram Street and Bernard Avenue, asking residents and drivers to stay away.

The police said the area will be sealed off until the investigation is completed.

Aircraft including drones have been banned from entering the area.

The province’s labor minister, Harry Bains, said in a written statement: “All workers have the right to a safe and healthy workplace-even one injury or death is too much.”

“This is a heartbreaking reminder that we must work hard to ensure the safety of all workers to prevent such incidents from happening.”

Baynes said that as the investigation continues, more information will be provided.

Crash interrupted power supply

Police said that power was interrupted in most of the city center and traffic was being diverted away from the area.

When the crane fell, Kelowna resident Krista Roessing was driving at the construction site.

“It looked like the crane was moving, but then I realized that it was not moving in a normal way, it was descending,” she said.

When people came to help from all directions, she called 911. Roessing said that construction workers began to ask people to stay away from the area, and emergency rescuers arrived within minutes.

“This is shocking,” she said. “It’s quite difficult to deal with.”

Anna Jacyszyn, who works in a nearby clothing store, was looking out the window and saw “huge dust” on the construction site.

After a while, emergency services began to arrive.

“I’m actually just praying and crying, because when you know someone might be hurt, your emotions can be very intense,” she said.

Her husband worked in construction at another site, which she said made the collapse feel more personal.
