San Diego (CNS)-The Surfers Foundation hosted a cleanup after Independence Day on a beach in San Diego County on Monday.
On Monday morning, the Surfers Foundation called it “the next morning.” Volunteers cleared the garbage and debris left on the county beaches, which were flocked to the coast by thousands of residents and tourists July 4th holiday weekend.
According to data from the Surfers Foundation, in 2019, nearly 800 volunteers removed 3,900 pounds of trash from five beaches within three hours, including 5,930 cigarette butts.
“These cleanups have raised awareness of how we inadvertently destroy our favorite beaches,” said Mitch Silverstein, branch manager of the San Diego Surfers Foundation. “Most importantly, we want to see beach tourists abandon common disposable plastic picnic supplies, such as bottled water, cups, plates, cutlery, etc., and replace them with reusable versions, which are unlikely to be left as trash. .”
This year’s cleanup work will be held from 9 am to 11 am:
- Ocean Beach Pier;
- Ocean Beach Dog Park;
- Belmont Park at Mission Beach;
- Crystal Pier on Pacific Beach;
- Moonlight Beach in Encinitas;
- Waterfront pier.
The clean-up activities are open to the public. Bags, gloves, and garbage collectors were provided during the supply period, but participants were encouraged to bring their own reusable supplies.
