During holiday weekends, weather caused PHL flights to be delayed more than 400 times


Due to the surge in travel during the July 4th holiday this weekend, and the area was affected by the rainy weather, Philadelphia International Airport experienced multiple delays and cancelled flights.

On Thursday, July 1, there were 410 delays on flights to and from PHL, and 57 flights were cancelled. As of 12:30 pm on July 2 (Friday), there were 76 delays and 15 cancellations of flights to and from the airport.

After the weather began to clear on Saturday, the delay eased. According to Flight Aware, as of Saturday, July 3 at 10 am, only 13 flights have been cancelled in the past 24 hours.

Airport spokesperson Heather Redfern told PhillyVoice in an email that it is “safe to assume” that delays and cancellations were caused by weather, but other factors may also cause delays.

“We remind passengers that even if the weather in Philadelphia is clear, strong storms will affect flights to and from PHL. Passengers should check with their airlines for flight status,” Redfern said.

The airport expects approximately 35,000 passengers to travel through PHL from Thursday to Monday this holiday weekend. It is estimated that there will be approximately 2.4 million passengers by July.

According to TSA’s federal policy, passengers must still wear masks at airports and on airplanes, and this policy is effective until September 13, 2021.

Now that COVID-19 restrictions in Philadelphia and across the country are being relaxed, airport officials have provided some advice for people flying for the first time in a while:

Before you travel:

• Know where to park: Redfern said the garage parking spaces are mostly full. Encourage passengers to take other modes of transportation, get off by their loved ones, use ride-sharing apps such as Uber or Lyft, public transportation, etc.

• Do your homework: Officials say passengers should study the COVID-19 testing and quarantine requirements at their destinations and use the scene COVID-19 testing facility, Open 7 days a week.

TSA checkpoint: Make sure to arrive at the airport two hours before the boarding time. All TSA checkpoints are open in PHL, and passengers can enter all terminals through any of these checkpoints.
