An early morning fire broke out in Chestermere, Alta province, killing 7 people, including 4 children.

RCMP Cpl. Tammy Kebel said that five people fled the fire.

She said that the cause of the fire had been determined, but the preliminary investigation did not indicate any criminal activity.

“This is a very tragic situation,” Kebel said.

Kebel said the deceased found at home are as follows:

  • One man and one woman, about 38 years old.
  • A woman about 35 years old.
  • Two 12-year-old children, one boy and one girl.
  • An eight-year-old girl.
  • A four-year-old boy.

The residence is located on the 300th block of Oakmere Close. The block is currently closed, and emergency rescuers are still at the scene.

Residents of Chestermere are required to stay away from the area and provide working space for staff.

Chestermere is just east of Calgary.
