The RCMP is investigating a fire at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Sipekne’katik First Nation, about 65 kilometers northwest of Halifax.
Police spokesperson Cpl. Chris Marshall said that the Indian Brook RCMP and the local fire department were dispatched to the church on Chapel Street at 4:20 am local time.
A spokesman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth said that the Katilin Healing and Cultural Center attached to the church was destroyed, but no one was injured.
John Stevens said in a statement: “Archbishop Dunn visited the site this morning and asked us to involve everyone in our prayers.”
Marshall said that once the safety of the scene is determined, investigators will begin trying to find out the cause of the fire.
“Our members will take over and work with the fire department and possibly the fire chief’s office to try to determine the cause of the fire, whether it is suspicious or otherwise.”
