Edmonton-Alberta reported 100 cases of COVID-19 on Sunday because the number of people receiving the second dose exceeded the number of people receiving the first dose.

In a limited update posted on the province’s COVID-19 information website, approximately 4,878 tests were completed, giving Alberta a positive rate of 1.8%.

Of the 100 cases reported on Sunday, 11 were suspected cases from the previous few days, and have since been confirmed as COVID-19 positive test results.

The 7-day average of new cases is 126. This is the eleventh consecutive day that Alberta has reported fewer than 200 daily cases. The last time Alberta reported only 100 new cases was in September.

The number of hospitalizations was 214, a decrease of 7 since Saturday. There are 53 people in the province receiving COVID-19 treatment in the ICU-an increase of 4 patients since Saturday.

According to reports, another person died of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total death toll in the province to 2,290.

Intake of the second dose continues to exceed the first dose, as more than 45,200 doses of the second dose have been inoculated as of Saturday, while the first dose was only 6,675.

Approximately 70.6% of people 12 years of age and older in Alberta received the first dose of the vaccine, and 28.6% of the eligible population was fully immunized.

Since expanding the availability of the second dose on Friday, more than 250,000 Albertans have booked their last dose.

The province now has 2,127 active COVID-19 cases. The Calgary region ranks first in the province with 1,005 active cases, accounting for 47% of the total number of active infections in Alberta.

There are 420 active cases in the North District and 404 in the Edmonton District. There were 218 cases and 78 cases in the Central District and South District, respectively. There are two active COVID-19 cases in Alberta of unknown origin.

The reproduction number or R value of Alberta from June 7 to June 13 was 0.76, which means that the transmission rate decreased during this period. The Edmonton region has an R value of 0.65, while the Calgary region has an R value of 0.79. The R value for the rest of Alberta is 0.80.

The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations and the number of ICU patients in the Calgary area leads the province, with 107 hospitalizations and 26 in the intensive care unit. There are 51 people in the Edmonton District and 14 in the ICU, while the North District has 24 and 5 people. 21 people were hospitalized in the central district, 7 were in the ICU, and 11 and 1 were in the southern district.

100 new variants of concern were discovered in Alberta on Sunday, including 60 Alpha or B.1.1.7 variants first discovered in the UK and 32 Delta or variants first discovered in India.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, is expected to personally release an update on the COVID-19 situation in Alberta sometime this week.
