BORREGO SPRINGS (CNS)-Early on Sunday afternoon, in the extremely hot desert, a hiker died after needing rescue on the Palm Canyon Trail in Borrego Springs. Another was in critical condition.

Cal Fire San Diego confirmed to FOX 5 that the weather is too hot and a firefighter needs rescue.

The evacuation started at around 12:40 pm on Saturday, when the low humidity and heat rose to about 115 degrees. To make matters worse, the canyon walls are trapped by heat, creating hot box conditions in some places.

The authorities said that the hikers were in trouble and needed rescue, but one of them died of a disease related to high temperature and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another hiker was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Cal Fire said a Borrego Springs firefighter fell in the heat trying to rescue hikers. The firefighter is expected to recover.
