The first pride parade was in 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City. In the past 50 years, Pride has gone from a solemn response to police brutality and discrimination against the LGBTQ community to a celebration of what it means to be queer.

The rights of the LGBTQ community in the United States have made great strides – but this is not always the case in other parts of the world.

Homophobic governments still deprive people of their rights, and homosexuality is still considered illegal in countries such as Iran, Myanmar, and Uganda.

We reviewed 10 years of pride parades around the world and reminded ourselves that for many people, pride is still a riot.
