FDA stated that if you are allergic to seafood, please do not eat Brood X cicada
If you plan to conduct a taste test on cicadas this summer, the US Food and Drug Administration said that if you are allergic to seafood, please postpone it.
“We have to speak up,” the FDA said in a tweet on Wednesday. “If you are allergic to seafood, please do not eat #cicadas, because these insects have a family relationship with shrimp and lobster.”
The appearance of “Brood X” CicadaOccurring every 17 years, thousands of bugs have been sent to Pennsylvania, northern Virginia, Indiana, and eastern Tennessee.
Facts have proved that these bugs are actually a good source of human nutrition.
Assistant Professor of Anthropology Montclair State University Cortni Bogerson said that cicadas are a good meat substitute because they are rich in protein and minerals.
“Insects are an important source of food for more than 2 billion people on the planet, including many food cultures in the United States,” Bergson said. “These small meats are not only a mainstream food source, they are also a more sustainable choice than other livestock species because they may require a lot of land, water and feed.”
according to Environmental Protection Agency, Cicadas do not pose a threat to humans, pets or gardens. However, if your pet eats them, it may cause stomach upset or vomiting, but there is no need to worry.
Want to try some? Bergson said that you can collect bugs in any garden you feel safe and avoid areas with industrial uses.
“When you get closer, you can hear it,” Bergson said. “So at dusk, look for the nymphs without wings and enjoy the incredible performance, because they are metamorphosing and slowly expanding their new wings. Then put some in a bag and take it home to freeze for about 30 minutes, Then prepare them.”
