Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation said last Thursday that the preliminary results of an investigation into the former’s land Kamloops Indian Boarding School The remains of approximately 215 children were found.

An aboriginal statement stated that some of the missing children, some as young as three, died without a document.

“Based on what we learned through the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc announcement at the Kamloops Boarding School, we are taking all measures, including the use of the technology we have available today, to address the possibility that there may be other than the cemetery. Marked at Shingwauk Cemetery,” the university Said in the release.

“We have a responsibility to complete this work with other people overseeing parts of the Shingwauk site, and we will continue to move forward in a respectful and responsible manner.”

Dozens of people were buried on the university campus

The temporary head of the Shingwauk Boarding School Center stated that 109 people are known to be buried on the university campus, including 72 former boarding school students-but there are likely to be more.

“Working with the children of the Shingwauk Alumni Association, the survivors said, for example, they remembered burying the children outside the cemetery,” Christa McCracken said.

She said that while the news from Kamloops was shocking and overwhelming, it confirmed what the boarding school survivors had been saying for years.

Algoma officials said they recently worked with the children of the New Walker Alumni Association to create an updated register listing the names of everyone buried in the cemetery.

The statement read: “In view of our current home and its history, Algoma University takes responsibility for the former students of Shingwauk and Wawanosh boarding schools and their families very seriously.”

“Our work will continue to be guided by our partners and our spiritual advisors to ensure that our work is done in a good manner, based on the tremendous work of the children of the Shinwauk Alumni Association and the staff of the Shinwauk Boarding School Center. “
