North Philly teen Cam Anthony wins voice

North Philadelphia’s own Cam Anthony won NBC’s “Voiceover” Season 20 on Tuesday night.

There were 40 artists at the beginning of the season. The 19-year-old is known for his soft, deep voice and reached the top five before he became the champion of the season’s finals in the U.S. Futsal vote.

As the winner, Anthony received a cash prize of US$100,000 and signed a recording contract with Universal Music Group.

Anthony gave a powerful interpretation of Motown artist GC Cameron’s song “It’s Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” in an episode last week. This song was sung by Boyz II Men in the 1990s.

In the season finale, he and his coach Blake Shelton sang “She Drives Me Crazy” by Fine Young Cannibals. He also sang “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi and “Stand Up” by Cynthia Erivos.

Anthony’s coach Blake Shelton praised the singer after winning the championship.

Shelton said: “Your participation in this performance and giving us the opportunity to participate in the journey changed this performance forever. We have always needed it.”

Anthony has attracted audiences and judges since the beginning of the season, when he performed Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” for a blind audition. Judges Blake Shelton, Nick Jonas and John Legend defended the singer’s joining their respective teams.

Jonas used “block” to prevent Anthony from joining John Legend’s team and asked him to join his team.
