Palestinians in the Gaza Strip took to the streets to celebrate the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, waving flags and flashing the “V” sign of victory.

The ceasefire came into effect early on Friday morning after Egypt facilitated the two sides to reach an agreement to stop Israel’s 11-day relentless bombing of the enclave under siege and rocket attacks in Gaza.

The May 10 escalation was triggered by the Israeli police’s suppression of protesters in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, after the city was nervous about plans to forcibly deport several Palestinian families back to Sheikh Jalah’s home. Neighborhoods for weeks.

In the Gaza Strip, which has been blocked for 14 years, Palestinians hugged each other Friday to celebrate the ceasefire in front of bombed buildings and on the wreck-covered streets. The mosque loudspeakers praised “the resistance movement has triumphed over occupation (Israel)”

In occupied East Jerusalem, Sheikh Jarrah was surrounded by similar festive scenes, as people in the car held up Palestinian flags and honked horns. Celebrations were also held in Ramallah and Bethlehem.

At least 232 Palestinians, including 65 children, were killed in the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip. In Israel, 12 people were killed, including two children.
