The Canadian Hurricane Center predicts that after the most active hurricane season on record last year, there will be an active hurricane season by 2021.

The center issued its forecast in a virtual briefing from its office in Dartmouth, North Dakota.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that there will be 6 to 10 hurricanes by 2021, compared to an average of 7 hurricanes.

Bob Robisaud, an early warning meteorologist at the center, said that three to five of these hurricanes are expected to be major hurricanes, and the average level of three is higher. Major hurricanes are classified as hurricanes with a sustained wind speed of at least 178 km/h.

Robichaud said that NOAA predicts that there will be 13 to 20 named storms by 2021.

He said that usually about 34% of named storms (an average of four) enter Canadian waters.

He said: “More storms are expected, and it is likely that we have seen more storms on the Atlantic coast of Canada than usual.”

The World Meteorological Organization has issued a list of hurricane names for 2021 that rotates every six years. Ana is the first storm of 2021.

Robichaud said that if the names in the name list are exhausted, a new name supplement list will be added for the first time.

In the case where the main name list was rarely used before, Greek letters were usually used.

When a storm causes severe damage or loss of life, the World Meteorological Organization will deactivate the name and replace it with another name on the six-year rotation list. After the storm caused severe damage, the name Dorian retired From the Bahamas to Nova Scotia in 2019.

Although the hurricane season officially started on June 1 and lasted until November 30, tropical storms in May are not uncommon, just like in the Atlantic Ocean outside Bermuda this week.

Robissau said that the current storm forming in the Atlantic has a 70% chance of becoming the number one storm of the season in the next two days and a 90% chance in the next five days.

He said: “Here, it is very likely that we will see storms before the hurricane season officially begins for the seventh year in a row.”

According to Philip Klotzbach, who leads the hurricane season forecast at Colorado State University, there have been 19 named storms since 1950.
