Some health experts questioned Canada’s decision to accept thousands of doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the Global Vaccine Sharing Alliance, only to let them sit in the freezer of an Ontario warehouse.
Through the COVAX program, more than 655,000 doses of AstraZeneca-most provinces have now decided not to use these drugs-arrived in Canada.
This was the first time that the vaccine was shipped to Canada, and it was not immediately distributed to the provinces and territories, because Ottawa is not yet clear who wants the vaccine.
Major General Dany Fortin, who manages vaccine logistics for the federal government, said on Thursday that the Public Health Agency of Canada is waiting for provinces to order these doses of vaccines before they are distributed.
However, most provinces have now decided not to give AstraZeneca the first dose, and are still considering whether to use it as a second dose or provide a second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.
Dr. Irfan Dhalla, an internal medicine expert in Toronto, said that it is unreasonable to sit on these doses and must choose to use these doses immediately or send them to the country where they will be used.
