Russian officials said that on Tuesday morning, a gunman attacked a school in Kazan, Russia, killing eight people, including seven students and a teacher, and wounding 21 others.

The governor of the Republic of Tarstan with Kazan as the capital, Rustam Minnikhanov, said on Tuesday that four males and three female eighth graders were killed in the shooting. Minnikhanov’s press service later stated that a teacher was also killed.

“The terrorist has been arrested, [he is] 19 years old. The gun is registered in his name. Other accomplices have not yet been established and are under investigation. “Minnikonov said after visiting the school, noting that the school has returned to safety.

According to health officials in the Republic of Tastan, 21 people were injured after the attack, including 18 children, and 6 of them were in intensive care.

The Russian state RIA Novosti news agency earlier reported that 11 people were killed in the Kazan school shooting. There is no way to immediately reconcile the different death tolls.

Increased safety measures

Authorities say that in Kazan, 700 kilometers east of Moscow, all schools have taken additional security measures.

The police launched a criminal investigation into the shooting. Video footage from the school building on Tuesday showed dozens of ambulances in front of the entrance.

Although shootings in Russian schools are relatively rare, there have been several violent attacks against schools in recent years, most of which were carried out by students.
