On Monday, Hamas militants fired dozens of rockets into Israel, including a barrage. The air strike sirens sounded as far as Jerusalem, after hundreds of Palestinians were in the disputed holy city. A shiny religious site clashed with Israeli police.

The rockets caused serious Israeli retaliation in the form of air strikes in the Gaza Strip. Health officials said that at least 20 people were killed in the fighting, including 9 children, making it one of the bloodiest battles between the two sides in years.

After weeks of clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian demonstrators in Jerusalem, the fighting intensified and increased tensions throughout the region. Some of these conflicts have already occurred in the Al-Aqsa compound. The Jews and Muslims are both sacred and threaten to trigger a wider conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas, a militant Islamic organization seeking to eliminate Israel, of crossing the “red line” and carrying out a rocket attack on Jerusalem, 100 kilometers north of Gaza, and promised to make severe Response.

He said: “Those who attack us will pay a heavy price and warn that the fighting may continue for some time.”

International intercession calm

In Washington, State Department spokesperson Ned Price condemned the firing of rockets into Israel in the strongest terms and called on all parties to calm the situation.

He said: “More broadly, we are deeply concerned about the situation in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, including the violent confrontation in Jerusalem.”

In the Arab-Israeli War in which Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967, it also occupied the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Later it annexed East Jerusalem and regarded the entire city as its capital. The Palestinians seek all three regions of the future country with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Hamas seized power in Gaza in 2007 and has since fought three wars with Israel. The organization has a huge arsenal of missiles and rockets that can strike almost anywhere in Israel.

A diplomat said that the United Nations, which often mediates between Israel and Hamas, Egypt and Qatar are all trying to stop the fighting. He is anonymous because he has no right to discuss this issue with the media.

The Israeli military said more than 50 rockets were fired at Israel throughout the night, most of which were aimed at southern Israeli towns near the border.

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said that six rockets aimed at Jerusalem, which is believed to be the first rocket attack on the city since 2014.

Children reported among the dead

Soon after the sirens sounded, explosions could be heard in Jerusalem. A rocket fell on the western suburbs of the city, causing minor damage to houses and causing electric brush fires. The Israeli army said that one rocket was intercepted and the others landed in an open area.

Israel launched air strikes on Hamas targets across Gaza. The Army said the rocket launcher and eight militants have been targeted.

In Gaza, health officials reported that a total of 20 people died, including 9 children.

It did not provide detailed data, but in the explosion in the northern town of Beit Hanoun, at least 7 members of a family, including 3 children, were killed. It is not clear whether the explosion was caused by an Israeli airstrike or a wrong rocket launched by Hamas.

Ashraf al-Masri, a member of the family, said there was an explosion outside the house.

He said: “We don’t know where it came from.” “We are trying to bury the children, but the situation in Beit Hanoun is very difficult and we are afraid of leaving home.”

The Israeli army said an Israeli civilian in the south of the country was slightly injured when an anti-tank missile hit a vehicle in Gaza.

Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the Hamas military department, said the attack on Jerusalem was a response to what he called Israel’s “crime and aggression” in Jerusalem. “This is a message that the enemy must understand well.”

He threatened that if Israeli forces planned to expel Palestinian families from residential areas in East Jerusalem or re-enter the Al-Aqsa compound in the Old City of Jerusalem, more attacks would be launched. The Jews are called the Temple Mount, the Muslims are called the compound of the noble sanctuary, and it is also the location of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Clashes in the mosque

Earlier, Israeli police fired tear gas, grenades and rubber bullets in the compound and clashed with stone-throwing Palestinians.

A live photographer from the Associated Press said that a dozen tear gas canisters and vertigo grenades fell on the mosque. Thick smoke came out of the mosque and the iconic golden-domed shrine on the scene, and rocks scattered around the surrounding square. In an area of ??the compound, shoes and debris were scattered on the gorgeous carpet.

Watch | Conflict in the Holy Land:

Monday’s unrest was the latest in a series of confrontations between the Israeli authorities and Palestinians in Jerusalem. 1:48

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said that more than 300 Palestinians were injured, of which 228 went to hospitals and clinics for treatment. The seven injured were in serious condition. The police said 21 police officers were injured, including 3 residents. Israeli medical staff said that seven Israeli civilians were also injured.

In order to avoid further confrontation, the Israeli authorities apparently changed the planned route of the Ultra-nationalist Jews through the Muslim Quarter of the Old City to commemorate “Jerusalem Day” and celebrate the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem.

The conflict took place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is already a time when people are sensitive to religion.

Angry plans to relocate

The recent planned deportation of dozens of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem has increased tensions, where Israeli settlers took over a long legal battle to take over property.

The Israeli Supreme Court postponed Monday’s key ruling on the grounds of “situation”.

After Netanyahu failed to form a ruling coalition last week, the tensions in Jerusalem threatened to reverberate throughout the region and became a critical moment of Israeli political crisis. His opponents are now working to establish an alternative government.

Before the rockets hit Jerusalem on Monday, Palestinian militants fired several rockets into southern Israel.

Protesters allied with Hamas launched dozens of burning balloons at Israel and set fire to the south of the country.

Israel’s actions are criticized

Israel’s actions in Jerusalem have received increasing international criticism.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold private consultations on the situation on Monday. The United States and the European Union expressed their deep concern over the turmoil in Jerusalem and urged Israel to calm the situation and refrain from the planned deportation. Israel’s Arab allies and Turkey also condemned Israel’s actions.

Netanyahu objected to the criticism on Monday, saying that Israel is determined to ensure the right to worship for everyone, and “this requires standing up from time to time and being as strong as the Israeli police and our security forces are now doing.”
