The personal injury law firm of Eberstein Witherite, LLP is proud to announce its sponsorship of the 66th Annual Sandra Meadows Classic Basketball Tournament, which will be held December 28 through December 30th at the Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena in Duncanville.

“We really want to be a positive presence in our community,” stated Amy Witherite, founding partner of Eberstein Witherite. “And this is one of the biggest girls varsity basketball tournaments in the country. Our firm is proud to sponsor this event that will bring 28 of the finest teams from Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky and California to see who is good enough to wear the champion’s crown.”

The event was first held in 1951, and is considered one of the top regional girls basketball tournaments. It is named after the late Sandra Meadows, a legendary girls basketball coach who took over the Duncanville High School program in 1968 and won four state championships during her long tenure.

Meadows’ teams also won 134 consecutive games between December 20, 1987 and March 1, 1991, a Texas record and the second longest winning streak in the nation. Meadows-coached teams won 906 games and only lost 207 times during her coaching career. The successful coach was not only known for her victories, but also for the way in which she taught her players life lessons such as doing things the right way, never giving up and believing anything was possible through hard work. Meadows was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.

“Coach Meadows was a great influence in my life,” stated Shelly Greco, personal injury attorney at Eberstein Witherite. “She wasn’t just a basketball coach, she was a mentor and a second mother to many of the players on her teams. She was a teacher of life and how to go about doing things in a way that you could be proud of no matter what the outcome. She was more concerned with building leaders and good people than winning games, but she did both with outstanding success.”

The Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena is home to the Duncanville Pantherettes who have won the tournament nine times in the past 16 years, and are the reigning 2016 Girls 6A State Champions under Coach Cathy Self-Morgan. The 2,000-seat arena is designed like a college venue with carpet in the locker rooms, a press table and a control booth.
