Singer and actor Ashley Parker Angel recently spoke out about the dangers of drunk driving, following a serious car crash involving his parents. Media reports say the former O-Town singer’s parents were injured after being hit by a drunk driver.

Angel’s mother was reportedly driving the vehicle when the head on collision occurred and she is stated to have sustained the most severe injuries. According to her son, she was placed in ICU in critical condition and will be required to undergo multiple surgeries. Angel posted a photo of his parents’ vehicle after the crash on social media, showcasing the damage.

“Ashley Parker Angel shared a photo of his parents’ horrific car accident on Wednesday, thanking fans for their prayers. “This picture is hard to even look at,” Angel captioned the photo, which shows the wreckage after his parents, Darren and Paula, were reportedly hit by a drunk driver on Sunday. “The photo was taken just moments after my Mom was cut by the jaws of life out of her destroyed car, after being pinned down and trapped inside for over an hour. The combined impact of both vehicles was like slamming into a wall at 120 mph.”

Angel said in a caption of the image, “Bottom line: this is what drunk driving looks like and not a soul alive deserves to be put through this kind of life-altering trauma due to the irresponsible and disgraceful actions of others.”

Surprising Drunk Driving Crash Statistics

According to Fort Worth accident injury attorney Amy Witherite of Eberstein Witherite LLP, who has no connection with the aforementioned accident case, the statistics are staggering with regards to drunk driving across the U.S. Says Witherite, “state to state these numbers never cease to amaze me. In the state of Texas alone over 1,000 people are killed and thousands more sustain very serious injuries each year as a result of a drunk driver.”

Statistics presented by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) support this notion, showing that in 2013, Texas had the highest number of drunk driving accident related deaths. The state also saw more than 99,000 DUI arrests, and 70,000 related convictions the same year.

Nationwide, approximately 290,000 people were injured in alcohol-impaired crashes. MADD says the costs in damages for these accidents amount to more than $132 billion annually. Organizations like MADD have longed worked to reduce instances of drunk driving throughout the country.
