The Frequency of Serious Traffic Accidents in Houston

Houston sees a relatively high number of traffic accidents compared to other Texas cities. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that within the city more than 60,000 traffic crashes occur each year, with a high number resulting in injuries. This is a high percentage of the 370,000 total accidents that occur in the state of Texas on average each year.

Another example is a recent fatal crash that occurred days prior to the truck wreck in North Houston as well. A driver was pronounced dead at the scene and two passengers were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Says Houston personal injury lawyer, Amy Witherite, whose law firm Eberstein Witherite LLP handles numerous Houston car crash cases each year, “the rate of traffic crash injury in areas like Houston are particularly disheartening after you seen the results of so many investigations that show most were caused by simple acts of negligence or careless driving behaviors.”

The attorney further notes that in many Houston truck accident cases, because of the size of big rigs compared to passenger vehicles, it is those in passenger vehicles who end up with the most catastrophic injuries and significant property damage.

Witherite suggests that individuals who are involved in serious accidents in Houston of any type get a professional assessment of their legal options as soon as possible because if one’s crash was linked to negligence or misconduct they may be able to recover compensatory damages for what they have endured from those responsible.

In cases where a fatality has occurred, surviving family members of victims may have basis for a wrongful death claim. Says Witherite in a past blog post on the topic “Medical bills and funeral expenses are examples of two of the key costs families of deceased traffic accident victims are faced with that they should not have to pay for out of pocket if their loved ones died as a result of another person’s negligence.”

Both of the aforementioned Houston accidents were still under investigation at the time of the reports. The causes of the crashes were not noted in either report.
