Crashes Involving 18-Wheelers

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than a reported 100,000 people are injured each year in crashes involving large trucks. In the agency’s Traffic Safety Facts report released last year, the agency said that in 2012, approximately 330,000 large trucks were involved in accidents and there was an increase in the number of related fatalities from the year prior.

“Fatalities in crashes involving large trucks showed a 4-percent increase from 3,781 in 2011 to 3,921 in 2012. Of these fatalities in 2012, 73 percent were occupants of other vehicles, 10 percent were nonoccupants, and 18 percent were occupants of large trucks. Between 2011 and 2012, fatalities in these crashes showed a 5-percent increase in the number of occupants of other vehicles killed and a 9-percent increase in the number of large-truck occupants killed.”

According to Texas based truck accident attorney Amy Witherite of the Eberstein Witherite LLP law firm, there are numerous preventative steps that can be taken by truck drivers to avoid becoming involved in a crash. Says Witherite “so many semi-truck accidents are caused by acts of negligence and many leave victims in their wake who are left to deal with not only their physical injuries, but also the financial damages they have incurred as a result” citing the numerous semi-truck accident cases her firm takes on each year.

The attorney says that in these circumstances it is wise for many to seek out the advice of a legal professional to determine what their options are for holding those liable accountable for the legal damages they have accrued.

The circumstances of the recent Texas 18-wheeler accident were still being investigated at the time of the report.
