Texas Truck Accident Attorney Amy Witherite Reports 18 Wheeler Hits Patrol Car

In a recent Texas truck crash, an 18-wheeler hit a patrol car at an intersection. The driver of the big rig reportedly failed to yield the right of way of the patrol unit. According to dash cam video from the patrol car, the officer had a green light when the truck hit his vehicle after pulling out of a side street.

“A press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety stated the Angelina County DPS office was notified at about 1:48 a.m. Thursday about a wreck involving a Diboll PD patrol car and an 18-wheeler at the intersection of Highway 59 and FM 1818. According to the preliminary accident report, a 1995 Freighliner tractor-trailer rig driven by Larry Eligah Menefee, 60, of Lufkin failed to yield the right of way at the intersection and struck a Diboll PD patrol unit driven by Officer Jacob Ryan Bailey, 29, of Broaddus.”

The impact of the crash knocked the officer’s vehicle into a concrete median. Reports say that no one was injured in the accident. The driver of the 18-wheeler received a citation for failing to yield right of way at a stop intersection.

Crashes Involving 18-Wheelers

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than a reported 100,000 people are injured each year in crashes involving large trucks. In the agency’s Traffic Safety Facts report released last year, the agency said that in 2012, approximately 330,000 large trucks were involved in accidents and there was an increase in the number of related fatalities from the year prior.

“Fatalities in crashes involving large trucks showed a 4-percent increase from 3,781 in 2011 to 3,921 in 2012. Of these fatalities in 2012, 73 percent were occupants of other vehicles, 10 percent were nonoccupants, and 18 percent were occupants of large trucks. Between 2011 and 2012, fatalities in these crashes showed a 5-percent increase in the number of occupants of other vehicles killed and a 9-percent increase in the number of large-truck occupants killed.”
