A teenage mother died in a serious Fort Worth car crash that also left two other people, including her infant child with injuries. The Fort Worth car accident attorneys of Eberstein Witherite LLP report that the accident occurred between a car and a flatbed truck that was hauling a trailer.

The teenager was a passenger in the vehicle that was struck by the pickup truck pulling the trailer. The truck hit the car on the passenger side, pushing it into another vehicle. The teen reportedly died at the scene. The other two people injured in the crash did not sustain serious injuries.

“Sarah Fortenberry, of Fort Worth, was a passenger in a Honda that was traveling westbound through the intersection of Jacksboro Highway/Texas Highway 199 and Nine Mile Bridge Road just after 7 p.m. when the vehicle was struck on its passenger side by a pickup pulling a trailer and then pushed into a Chevrolet Avalanche, police said.”

Motor Vehicle Accidents and Teens
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. The agency’s data shows that although individuals ages 15-24 only represent 14 percent of the population in the country, “they account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females.”
Fort Worth car accident attorney Amy Witherite says of the issue “we’ve tried a number of fatal car wreck cases involving teenagers that have been linked to negligence or misconduct, and it never gets easier witnessing the grief of families who are forced to deal with such an unexpected tragedy.”
Initial investigations indicate that either the driver of the truck, or the passenger vehicle in the aforementioned accident may have run a red light when entering the intersection. Police were trying to determine fault at the time of the report. Family members say the driver of the car was the 15-year-old fiancé of the teen killed. The baby girl of the couple was also in the car at the time.
Depending on the circumstances, the surviving loved ones of teenagers who have lost their lives in a car crash can possibly seek legal compensation for any related damages. Witherite says “many families are uncomfortable with the idea of bringing civil action against liable parties under these circumstances; however, the law does allow them to recover damages for economic and other losses they are faced with.” The Fort Worth attorney further notes that in many cases, this is the only means some have to alleviate the strain of paying for their loved ones’ final expenses.
No arrests have been made in the crash. The accident was still under investigation at the time of the report.
