Dallas Business Lawyer Mike Young condemned as “thug tactics” the armed protest by the Bureau on American Islamic Relations (BAIR) that took place Saturday at the Islamic Center of Irving, Texas.
“The protesters do have First and Second Amendment rights,” Young said. “Yet, one does not have to be a jerk when exercising those rights. This event was not about free speech, assembly, or the exercise of a right to bear arms. The purpose was clearly to intimidate a group of people who have different religious beliefs.”
Attorney Young acknowledged the BAIR protesters’ concerns about Syrian refugees being admitted to the United States by the Obama administration. He said, “Every refugee should be vetted, whether from Syria or any other country, in order to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all Americans and other immigrants. That’s not being done. However, trying to scare law-abiding Texas Muslims will do nothing to change immigration policies in Washington, D.C. If you’re upset with federal immigration laws and regulations, contact the White House, Texas U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and your local U.S. Representative.”
Asked what he would do if he were a Muslim American, Young replied, “In addition to informing local law enforcement of threats, I’d exercise my Second Amendment rights to protect myself, family, and friends. BAIR apparently doesn’t understand that the Constitution also supports the rights of non-Christians to arm and defend themselves.”
Young recommended that adult Muslim Americans living in the DFW area join the National Rifle Association or the Gun Owners of America to learn more about their Second Amendment rights and self-defense.
