Los Angeles – Eli Lilly has been cleared of liability in the first trial involving claims about the side effects of its Cymbalta drug. Approximately 250 plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against the drug maker claiming the antidepressant caused severe symptoms of withdrawal. The recent trial was for the case of Claudia Herrera who filed a suit against the company in federal court in California.

The complainants allege that Eli Lilly downplayed warnings about possible side effects experienced by patients who stopped taking the drug. Cymbalta was approved in 2004 by the FDA for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Approval was subsequently expanded to include other disorders.

Celeste Stanley, a spokeswoman for Lilly, is quoted as stating of the trial outcome, “While Lilly is sympathetic to Ms. Herrera's conditions, we are pleased with the jury's verdict.”

The trial was one of four that have been scheduled for the month of August.

The annual sales for the popular total approximately $3.9 billion.
