Fort Worth, TX – Dunbar High School has begun accepting donations for the support of students in need of backpacks and school supplies for the upcoming school year. The Fort Worth personal injury law firm of Eberstein Witherite, LLP will help sponsor this year’s annual Dunbar High School Back to School Rally & Parade, which is set to take place on Saturday, August 22.

Recognizing The Impact of Poverty on Student Education

Earlier this year, The Washington Post released a report on research showing that a majority of the students in public schools in the U.S. live in poverty.

“For the first time in at least 50 years, a majority of U.S. public school students come from low-income families, according to a new analysis of 2013 federal data, a statistic that has profound implications for the nation.”

Texas is one state in particular where many students are part of families who live in poverty. According to information from the United States Census Bureau, 17 percent of the population in the state were living below the poverty level from 2009-2013, which was higher than the national average of 15.4 percent. In Fort Worth, the number of persons living below the poverty level was even higher at 19.3 percent.

The social issue has a major impact on the educational attainment outcomes for students faced with this predicament. Related challenges for students living in poverty include a higher likelihood that they will not be exposed to enrichment activities outside of school or have access to money needed for items like school supplies and backpacks.

Research has shown that not having required textbooks or school supplies adversely affects a student’s progress in school. In Fort Worth many families are unable to provide these resources for their school aged students on their own and rely on the help of community resources and initiatives like school supply drives to get what they need.

Educational Tools for Learning and Growing

The Dunbar High School Back to School Rally & Parade is designed to support the students and families of the Dunbar Pyramid who cannot afford required school supplies needed for getting through the school year. Says Fort Worth personal injury lawyer Amy Witherite of her firm’s participation this year “we are always excited to be given the opportunity to help further the education of students in Fort Worth and every community we serve. We want to make sure that no student we have the ability to help goes without the tools they need for success.”

Members of the Eberstein Witherite team will be on hand at both the parade and rally on August 22. Activities will begin at 9 a.m. Organizers are expecting 300 guests to be in attendance. Those seeking more information about the event can contact [email protected]. 

A drop off box for those who would like to donate school supplies has been made available at Dunbar High School. Donations are being accepted through August 18.
