US – Airfares could decrease this summer as the number of flight passengers is expected to reach record highs. According to a Skift report, airline industry lobbying and trade group Airlines for America recently released their prediction that between June 1 and August 31 airlines will carry an estimated 222 million passgeners. The number is an increase from a 2007 record 217.6 summer flight passengers.

The average number of passengers per day is expected to be 2.4 million, an 4.5 increase from last summer.

In response to projected increases, airlines are adding more seats and utilizing larger planes. The additions has some analysts proposing that airfares will be discounted in order to ensure that they are all filled. The current average for a round trip domestic is around $450.

Space for passengers is also expected to be limited. Bureau of Transportation figures from last July show that airlines in the U.S. sold 87.8 percent of domestic flight seats.

Airlines for America says that 13 of the 15 busiest travel days occur during the summer.
