From crowns to hard hats and high heels to boots, Saturday, April 18th will find Miss Alabama titleholders throughout the state coming together to work on projects for their community service portion of their program. “Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery will be one of the lucky beneficiaries of these young women’s day of service”, said Nan Teninbaum, President of the Miss Alabama Pageant. “Our young women are dynamic leaders that understand the importance of giving back and helping out when there is a need”, she said. “The Miss Alabama Pageant stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished when college women are challenged and encouraged to achieve ambitious goals. This day of service is nothing new for these young women— we’re just doing it on the same day”, concluded Teninbaum.
“It is nothing short of a blessing to have the opportunity to participate in the Miss America Serves Day”, said Madelyn Gathings, Miss Northeast Alabama. “For myself, service is invaluable and one of the many reasons I am involved in the Miss America Organization. Nothing compares to the great joy you feel when you serve others and live beyond the means of yourself”, she said. “A project of this magnitude has the capability of touching so many lives, not only in the state of Alabama, but throughout this nation. I am so excited to be able to contribute my part in touching the lives of others”, continued Gathings.
“Some may think of the Miss Alabama and Miss America contestants as beautiful young women who just compete for a crown”, said Brenda Campbell, Miss Alabama Local Field Director. “Few are aware that the four points of the Miss Alabama and Miss America crowns stand for Style, Scholarship, Success and Service. On April 18th, Miss Alabama contestants from the South/Central Alabama area will be donning a different ‘Style’ as they put aside their evening gowns for a day of work shirts and tool belts. Even though each contestant works individually throughout the year to raise awareness of relevant social issues, all are committed to the Miss America platform of raising money for Children’s Miracle Network”, she said. “Through the Miss America Serves Day, several of the Miss Alabama contestants will work together to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network while helping a Montgomery family realize the American Dream of home ownership. Each contestant will be asking family, friends and the community to support her by making pledges for each hour she works at the Habitat site. Funds will go directly to Children’s Miracle Network making this a truly win-win situation”, she continued.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to work with such amazing young women to help both organizations”, Campbell said. “This will be the second Habitat build I’ve worked with. My brother told me they would probably send me to get coffee on my first build. Instead, I was happy to tell him they put me to work digging the foundation and running rebar! What an honor to be used as God’s hands and feet on earth!”, she concluded. I am humbled and ecstatic to be able to work with Miss America Serves Day and Habitat for Humanity to help a family have a home and sanctuary for their fondest memories to flourish!”, concluded Callens.
