Trainer pleads guilty in violent Jewish divorce plot

New Jersey – A trainer accused of being involved in a plot to intimidate Jewish husbands into granting religious divorces to their wives has pleaded guilty to related charges. As reported by Reuters, New York trainer David Hellman, 31, and nine other men were arrested last year in connection with the scheme in which they allegedly used violence to force the men to agree to a divorce.

As noted in the report, Orthodox Jewish women are not able to obtain divorces without consent from their husbands via a “get” document. Wives paid money to the ring, which kidnapped and beat their husbands to get their consent, prosecutors say.

Hellman, who is set to be sentenced June 12, faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine.

Criminal charges are still pending against the others arrested in the scheme.
