Pessaries have long been regarded as effective tools to help physicians manage multiple types of pelvic support defects, including genuine stress urinary incontinence. The device is also effective for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and may be a viable alternative for some women who would be prone to the risks of additional health complications with certain surgical procedures.

Many women who have developed gynecologic problems as a result of weakened pelvic floor muscles elect to use a pessary over surgical repair despite the device not offering a permanent solution. For some, this is due to the fact that they only require temporary management of pelvic floor defects, while others are poor candidates for surgery due to other health issues they may be dealing with. Women who have heart disease or have had a hysterectomy often fit into this category.

Pessaries Are an Option for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

“Sophie Ramsay, MD, and collaborators at Université de Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, Quebec, studied 429 women who had a pessary trial at their institution. The women had an average age of 71 years and 50% previously had a hysterectomy and 22% had prior prolapse surgery. The median duration of pessary use was 35 months (range 1 to 136 months).

The study showed that 96% of subjects were satisfied or very satisfied with their pessaries and 66% could handle the pessary by self-maintenance. Another 23% needed assistance from a regional nurse and 11% required maintenance by clinic nurses at the researchers’ institution.”
