Individuals who are preparing to leave a Medicaid nursing home or public institution often need help to make arrangements to transition into their new community. Particularly when it comes to the issue of financial support, questions about Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility are often at the top of the list of questions people need answers to when they are in this predicament. Individuals who are in the process of transitioning back into the community after living in a Medicaid nursing home, hospital, or jail can apply for SSI benefits prior to their release if they qualify for what is referred to as a prerelease procedure.

In accordance with the terms of prerelease agreements, as outlined by the Social Security Administration (SSA), applicants can apply for SSI disability benefits months in advance of their projected release date for expedited processing of their claim. For those living in a Medicaid nursing home, for which at least half of their stay is paid for through Medicaid, or in a hospital or institution where the stay is paid for through Medicare, they may be eligible to use the procedure and get an answer as to how much they should expect to receive in SSI after they leave the facility.

Wright & Wright, America’s Social Security Disability Firm? can help individuals who have questions about prerelease agreements or the application process for loved ones who may be institutionalized or living in a nursing home or hospital, and expect to be released. The firm’s advocates can help obtain information about whether an agreement exists between the facility where the applicant is currently staying and the SSA as well as other inquiries.

Contact Wright & Wright today if you need help, and arrange for a free disability case review.
