Salt Lake City, Utah – The stars of the TLC program “Sister Wives” are seeking to challenge the bigamy law in the state of Utah. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Kody Brown and his four wives have filed a lawsuit seeking to have the law declared unconstitutional.

Bigamy in the state is categorized as a third degree felony, carrying up to a five-year jail sentence.

The reality show stars previously fled Utah County due to pending related criminal charges; however, prosecutors have announced that no charges would be pursued against them under the bigamy law.

Paul Murphy, spokesman for Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, is quoted by the AP as stating of bigamy between consenting adults, “It is not protected under religious freedom because states have the right to regulate marriage.”
