Los Angeles – Rodney King, whose 1991 beating by Los Angeles police officers gained national attention after being caught on videotape, has died. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), King was found in a swimming pool by his fiancé early Sunday morning.

King, 47, gained notoriety and was dubbed a symbol of police brutality after being repeatedly beaten with clubs by police officers during a traffic stop. The acquittals of the officers during a subsequent trial sparked a race riot in Los Angeles the following year.

King has reportedly since battled alcohol addiction and other personal struggles. He released the memoir prior to his death, The Riot Within: From Rebellion to Redemption.
