LaPlace, LA — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 10 has led to the deaths of five people and injured two others early Friday, February 10, 2012. The fatal automobile accident occurred outside of New Orleans in the westbound lanes of I-10, reported the Associated Press.

The Louisiana State Police reported that a vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it crashed head-on into another vehicle. The crash set the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on fire.

The crash killed the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, and all four occupants of the other vehicle. Responding emergency crews pronounced everyone dead at the scene.

A passing 18-wheeler then sideswiped the wreck, before another vehicle slammed into the 18-wheeler.

The driver of the 18-wheeler and vehicle sustained only “minor injuries” in the wreck.

The identities of those involved are being withheld at this time.

Investigations into the wrong-way, head-on collision are underway.
