Gainesville, FL — A massive motor vehicle accident along Interstate 75 killed at least 10 people and injured as many as 18 others early Sunday, January 29, 2012. The fatal traffic accident occurred just south of Gainesville as haze and smoke blanketed the highway, reported the Palm Beach Post.

Police reported that at least a dozen cars and six semi-trucks were involved in the pile-up, which set fire to some of the vehicles. The highway was shut down prior to the wrecks, due to fog and heavy smoke from a nearby brush fire that may have been intentionally set.

Many vehicles were found burnt-out, with some with bodies still inside.

Police have not released the identities of the victims of the pile-up.

Responding emergency crews rushed 18 people to area hospitals for treatment of injuries.

The Florida Forest Service stated that they are trying to determine whether the blaze had been intentionally set, because there were no control burns or lightening in the area.

Investigations are underway.
