Grand Rapids, MI — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Steelcase have voluntarily recalled about 11,000 Amia desk chairs for fall hazards the product poses to consumers. The CPSC announced the nationwide product recall on January 18, 2012.

The recall was issued after discovering that the pivot pins installed in the control mechanism under the chair seat can fall out, which poses a fall hazard to consumers.

“This recall includes the model 482 Series Steelcase Amia desk chairs manufactured between March 1, 2011 and June 6, 2011. The model number and manufacture date are printed on a label on the underside of the chair seat. The seats are available in various colored fabric options as well as leather,” reported the CPSC.

Consumers are advised to contact Steelcase in order to receive adhesive covers to apply over the pivot pins on the chairs.

The desk chairs sold for between $350 and $700 at authorized Steelcase dealers and other retail outlets like Healthy Back Store, CSN, Home Office Solutions, Office & Company and Sam Flax stores nationwide.

For more information concerning the product recall, consumers can contact Steelcase toll-free at (800) 391-7194 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Consumers can also e-mail Steelcase at [email protected].
