Westminster, CA — A garbage truck hit and killed a pedestrian who was trying to flag down the truck in a residential area of Westminster. The fatal pedestrian accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. at 9021 Madison Avenue Thursday, December 29, 2011, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Witnesses told police that a woman, identified as Betty Dietz, 65, was trying to flag down the trash truck as she stepped into the street in a cul-de-sac near her house. In doing so, Dietz was accidentally run over by the truck.

The driver apparently did not see Dietz and only got out of his truck after he heard the truck run her over.

Officials believe Dietz forgot to put her trash out and was trying to get the driver’s attention when the accident occurred.

Police say the death appears to be a “horrible accident” and do not see anything criminal.

Investigations are underway.
