Mullan, ID — A rock burst at the Lucky Friday Mine injured seven miners early Wednesday evening, December 14, 2011. The mining accident occurred on the 5900 level of the mine around 7:50 p.m., reported KXLY.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office reported that a rock burst had occurred in the mine, which is typically a spontaneous, violent fracturing of rock.

All 20 miners in the Lucky Friday Mine were accounted for following the rock burst, but seven miners were injured.

Responding emergency crews transported the injured miners to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene for treatment of reportedly minor injuries. They are currently in stable condition.

The identities of the victims are being withheld at this time.

The mine has since been temporarily shut down and investigations are ongoing.

This is reportedly the fifth incident to occur at Lucky Friday Mine this year.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration are looking into the incident.
