Long Beach, CA — A 26-year-old woman plunged 75 feet into the frigid harbor waters from an RMS Queen Mary walkway Monday night, December 5, 2011, leaving her dead. Police were alerted of the fall around 8:35 p.m., and that a man had jumped 15 feet into the water in an attempt to save her, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Long Beach Fire Department officials reported that the woman had fallen off of the ship, which prompted a 40-year-old man to jump in the water to rescue her.

Responding emergency crews rushed the woman and the man to an area hospital for treatment. The woman was later pronounced dead, while the man was treated for hypothermia.

The identity of the woman and the man are being withheld at this time.

Police officials revealed that the woman had apparently been drinking with her boyfriend and lost her balance, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Investigations into the deadly fall are underway.
