Queens, NY — Police are looking into an accident at a Queens nursing home that led to the death of a resident over the weekend. The wheelchair-bound resident fell down a staircase Sunday morning, December 4, 2011, at Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica, reported NY1.

Details are limited, but police do not suspect any criminality and believe it was an accident.

The victim was reportedly in a wheelchair when he plummeted down the flight of stairs, leading to his death.

The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.

The doors that lead to the staircase are supposed to be locked, according to a man whose wife lives at the facility.

It is believed that the door may have been left open. Only employees have the passcode to open the doors.

An investigation into the death is underway and the nursing home is conducting an internal review.
