Bend, OR — A head-on collision killed a 22-year-old Bend man when his car hit a pickup truck towing a trailer at a southeast Bend intersection. The fatal traffic accident occurred late Monday afternoon, November 14, 2011, at 4:24 p.m. at the intersection of Southeast Second and Scott streets, reported KTVZ.

According to reports, Nicholas Hammell, 22, was headed southbound on Second Street in a 1998 Honda Accord, when he drifted across the center line and slammed head-on into a 1994 Dodge Ram pickup truck towing a trailer.

Responding emergency crews removed Hammell from the wreckage and rushed him via ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend for treatment of serious and life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the pickup truck, Damien Plazola, 25, of Redmond, and a passenger were not injured in the wreck.

Preliminary investigations have indicated that Hammell was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or speed played a role in the wreck.

Investigations are underway.
